No 4: Dario Rodriguez, Uruguay v Denmark, group match, 2002

The ball does not touch the ground between Alvaro Recoba’s corner for Uruguay and Dario Rodriguez’s shot hitting the net. Rene Henriksen’s headed clearance for Denmark is controlled on the volley by Pablo Garcia, who steadies himself with some keepy-uppy before chipping the ball sideways. Rodriguez smashes a first-time effort home.

No 3: Diego Maradona, Argentina v Greece, group match, 1994

A move so fast that a slow-motion replay is needed to comprehend it fully. A lightning exchange of passes gives Diego Maradona the chance to score, although his contribution is tainted by his subsequent failure of a drugs test. Fernando Redondo executes one-twos with Maradona and Claudio Caniggia in the blink of an eye before teeing up Maradona – all five passes are struck first-time and most of them firmly.

No 2: Carlos Alberto, Brazil v Italy, final, 1970

Style, grace and ferocity are combined for Brazil’s fourth and final goal of the match. Clodoaldo’s contribution is perhaps the most memorable as he beats four opponents inside his own half by cutting inside to the left each time. Jairzinho holds off two challenges on the wing to find Pele. Then comes the calm before the storm – Pele, walking, strokes the ball nonchalantly to his right, from where Carlos Alberto delivers a thunderous shot into the net.

No 1: Diego Maradona, Argentina v England, quarter-final, 1986

If England players feel like kicking Diego Maradona just four minutes after he has scored the opening goal with his fist, they cannot get close enough to do so. Collecting the ball near the halfway line, he drags it away from Peter Beardsley, knocks it beyond Peter Reid and bursts clear, jinking inside Terry Butcher, outside Terry Fenwick and round Peter Shilton before poking it home.
