Book Review: Gandhi: Naked Ambition by Jad Adams

Book Review: Gandhi: Naked Ambition

The pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India’s independence movement, pioneer of non-violent resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience (satyagraha), honoured in India as ‘father of nation’, Mohandas K. Gandhi has inspired movements for civil rights and political freedom across the world. Jad Adams offers a concise and elegant account of Gandhi’s life: from his birth and upbringing in a small princely state in Gujarat during the high noon of the British Raj, to his assassination at the hands of a Hindu extremist in 1948 only months after the birth of the independent India which he himself he had done so much to bring about. He delineates the principal events of a career that may truly be said to have changed the world: his training as a barrister in late Victorian London; his civil rights work in Boer War-era South Africa; his leadership of the Indian National Congress; his focus on obtaining self-government and control of all Indian government institutions, and the campaigns of non-cooperation and non-violence against British rule in India whereby he sought to achieve that aim (including the famous ‘Salt March’ of March/April 1930); his passionate opposition to partition in 1947 and his fasts-unto-death in a bid to end the bitter and bloody sectarian violence that attended it. Jad Adams’s accessible and thoughtful biography not only traces the outline of an extraordinary life with exemplary clarity, but also examines why Mahatma Gandhi and his teachings are still profoundly relevant today.

Book Review: The Men Who Killed Gandhi by Manohar Malgonkar

Book Review: The Men Who Killed Gandhi

The Men Who Killed Gandhi, a gripping recreation of India’s partition, independence and Gandhi’s assassination on January 31, 1948, was first published during the Emergency years. “This made it incumbent upon me to omit certain vital facts,” Malgonkar writes in the introduction , “such as, for instance, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s secret assurance to Mr L B Bhopatkar, that his client, Mr V D Savarkar, had been implicated as a murder suspect on the flimsiest ground.” The excised portions, along with rare photographs and documents from the National Archives are included in this 11th edition. This book is a reprint of the 1978 original, timed for the 60th anniversary of the event, with some additions in the form of rare photographs and documents unearthed by the publishers and not the author Manohar Malgonkar, now 95 and a virtual recluse. His account of the conspiracy, 30 years after the event, was a landmark effort that cemented his reputation as a historian.
Of the six conspirators, Nathuram Godse, who fired the shot heard around the world, and Narayan Apte, who was by his side, were hanged. The other four were: Digambar Badge, who turned approver; Vishnu Karkare; Gopal Godse, Nathurams younger brother; and Madanlal Pahwa. Malgonkar met them after they had served their life sentences and they spoke to him at great length. All four provided information they had not revealed before and Malgonkar produced perhaps the most complete account of the plot to assassinate Gandhi.

Book Summary:God’s-Little-Soldier by Kiran Nagarkar

Kiran Nagarkar’s Ravan and Eddie was one of the best novel about chawls in Mumbai. He came up with God’s Little Soldier after a gap of 9 years.

The book is in three sections, dealing with three stages in the life of the protagonist Zia Khan, the son of a liberal Muslim family living in Mumbai. His immersion in Islamic doctrine at the urging of his devout aunt Zubeida, and his conviction as he grows up that he is destined to be “God’s little soldier”, a defender of Islamic values in a degenerate and immoral world.

Zia is a mathematical genius who nevertheless has no great love for mathematics; he has three girlfriends at his posh school but is indifferent towards all of them; he is petty in his dealings with family members yet they all, like Nagarkar, love him to bits. As a student in Cambridge, he decides to assassinate Salman Rushdie, the “obstreperous Midnight’s Child” and the scourge of Islam, and hunts him down, only to be stymied at the last moment; this makes him flee the country. Later he becomes a guerilla in Afghanistan and Kashmir.

In later what we find that Zia has renounced his precious Islamic faith to become the zealous Brother Lucens, a monk at an abbey. Here his activities include making massive profits on the stock market, running a campaign against abortion, and setting up an organisation called The Guardian Angels dedicated to nothing less than the moral rejuvenation of godless, sinful America.

And in the third part of the novel we find that Lucens has taken up with a Hindu godman, Shakta Muni, and has taken on a new name, Tejas Nirantar.

This novel is worth to try because Kiran Nagarkar is a master storyteller, and we always love to read good story.

Book Summary: Zero Percentile : Missed IIT Kissed Russia by Neeraj Chhibba

Book Summary: Zero Percentile : Missed IIT Kissed Russia

Zero Percentile is a heady cocktail of the fascinating adventures of Pankaj, a less favoured son of destiny, across two completely different countries, India and Russia.

Neeraj Chhibba was born and raised in India. He studied engineering at Volgograd, Russia, where he spent almost seven and a half years of his life. He is currently employed with a software company in India. His single claim to literary honours is a ‘Highly Commendable’ certificate in Class X in an English Essay Competition organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society and he himself was surprised to be the only one in New Delhi to have received it that year in his category.

He could perhaps have done more but the pressure of succeeding professionally and earning bread made him turn away from writing. This is his first book. And if you like it, he promises, there would be a lot more.
This is really a fun read…..definitely a must have!!

Book Summary: May I Hebb Your Attention Pliss by Arnab Ray

Book Summary: May I Hebb Your Attention Pliss by Arnab Ray

The wave of liberalization in the 1990s changed forever the face of India. It bolstered the economy. It raised the stock index. It raised hem lines of skirts even more. It led to the growth of the fashion police. And also the moral police. Numbered items became item numbers. To the twenty-two scheduled languages were added C, Cobol, Java. You were either watching sitcoms or starting dotcoms. News became entertainment. Entertainment became news. Terror struck the country — sometimes in the form of gunmen from across the border and sometimes in the form of Bollywood movies.

To SMS-ize – ‘It wuz da best of tyms, it wuz da wrst of tyms.’

Having been a part of this chaotic revolution in popular culture, blogger Arnab Ray of greatbong.net takes a funny, sarcastic, politically incorrect and totally irreverent look at assorted random stuff including Bollywood C-grade revenge masalas, ribald songs of the people, movie punching, fake educational institutes, stubborn bathroom flushes, unreal reality shows, the benefits of corruption, opulent weddings, brains in toaster ovens, seedy theatres and pompous non-resident Indians.

Nothing here is off-limits and no cow too holy.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

To die tomorrow was no worse than dying on any other day. Every day was there to be lived or to mark one’s departure from this world. Everything depended on one word: “Maktub.”

The novel tells the tale of Santiago, a boy who has a dream and the courage to follow it. After listening to “the signs” the boy ventures in his personal, Ulysses-like journey of exploration and self-discovery, symbolically searching for a hidden treasure located near the pyramids in Egypt.

Santiago sees the greatness of the world, and meets all kinds of exciting people like kings and alchemists. However, by the end of the novel, he discovers that “treasure lies where your heart belongs“, and that the treasure was the journey itself, the discoveries he made, and the wisdom he acquired.

This novel is about optimism,as the alchemist himself says, when he appears to Santiago in the form of an old king “when you really want something to happen, the whole universe conspires so that your wish comes true“.

Fear of failure seems to be the greatest obstacle to happiness. As the old crystal-seller tragically confesses: ” I am afraid that great disappointment awaits me, and so I prefer to dream“.In the desert, Santiago meets his “twin-soul” and discovers that love is the core of existence and creation. As Coelho explains, when we love, we always try to improve ourselves, and that’s when everything is possible. The subject of love inspires a beautiful lyricism in Coelho’s writing: ” I love you because the whole universe conspired for me to come close to you.”

All of us have dreams, and are dying for somebody to tell us that they may come true. And it’s the novel which fulfill your desire to be told.

Book Summary: We,the Nation : The Lost Decades by Palkhivala

Book Summary: We,the Nation : The Lost Decades by Palkhivala

India, the sleeping giant of an economy – in the words of Lee Kuan Yew – is, at last, slowly stirring from its long night of slumber, drugged as it has been for decades with the opiate of socialism. This amazing subcontinent with its mosaic of colours, cultures, contrasts and maddening contradictions, always has, thanks to vast quantities of its own indigenously manufactured red tape and venal politicians, been held in thrall for so long. It is only now, and that too hesitantly, that India is moving to take its rightful place in the community of nations of the world.
What ails India, what its potential is, how magnificent its heritage is, how richly endowed it is by both history and nature, are all highlighted in this book. The author brings a razor-sharp mind to bear on the myriad subjects he touches, ranging from the noble Constitution of India, the man-made malaise seizing India from time to time, eminent personalities, to the daunting task of redesigning India for the 21st century. The convoluted problems that India is heir to, and confronted with, are analyzed, and unlike most armchair critics and analysts, solutions and suggested.

Twilight In Delhi – Ahmed Ali

Twilight In Delhi – Ahmed Ali

Twilight in Delhi set in nineteenth century Delhi brings history alive, depicting most movingly the decay of an entire culture and way of life. The British are to be the rulers of the country and change is inevitable. Vivid and captivating, it is truly a masterpiece. In the words of Bonamy Dobree, ‘Mr. Ahmed makes us hear and smell Delhi . . . hear the flutter of pigeons’ wings, the cry of itinerant vendors, the calls to prayer, the howls of mourners, the chants of qawwals, smell jasmine and sewage, frying ghee and burning wood.

’ When it was first published in 1940, Twilight in Delhi was widely acclaimed by critics and hailed in India as a major literary event. It has since become a classic. It has been translated into Urdu, French, Portuguese, Spanish and German . ‘It is beautifully written and very moving . . . At the end, one has a poignant feeling that poetry and daily life have got parted, and will never come together again’ —E.M. Forster ‘The writing provides a curiously pictorial effect, yet is itself as clear as water. The end where innocence is drowned by experience is intensely moving’

Songs of Blood and Sword – Fatima Bhutto

Songs of Blood and Sword – Fatima Bhutto

Fatima Bhutto was born in Afghanistan in 1982. She studied at Columbia University and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She currently writes columns for The Daily Beast, New Statesman and other publications. She lives in Karachi, Pakistan.

In September 1996 a fourteen-year-old Fatima Bhutto hid in a windowless dressing room shielding her baby brother while shots rang out in the streets outside the family home in Karachi. This was the evening that her father, Murtaza, was murdered along with six of his associates.

In December 2007 Benazir Bhutto, Fatima’s aunt, and the woman she had publicly accused of ordering her father’s murder, was assassinated in Rawalpindi. It was the latest in a long line of tragedies for one of the world’s best known political dynasties.

Songs of Blood and Sword tells the story of the Bhuttos, a family of rich feudal landlords who became powerbrokers in the newly created state of Pakistan; the epic tale of four generations of a family and the political violence that would destroy them. It is the history of a family and nation riven by murder, corruption, conspiracy and division, written by one who has lived it, in the heart of the storm.

The history of this extraordinary family mirrors the tumultuous events of Pakistan itself, and the quest to find the truth behind her father’s murder has led Fatima to the heart of her country’s volatile political establishment.

Finally Songs of Blood and Sword is about a daughter’s love for her father and her search to uncover, and to understand, the truth of his life and death.

Following Fish: Travels Around The Indian Coast – Samanth Subramanian

Following Fish: Travels Around The Indian Coast – Samanth Subramanian

In a coastline as long and diverse as India’s, fish inhabit the heart of many worlds—food of course, but also culture, commerce, sport, history and society. Journeying along the edge of the peninsula, Samanth Subramanian reports upon a kaleidoscope of extraordinary stories.

In nine essays, Following Fish conducts rich journalistic investigations: among others, of the famed fish treatment for asthmatics in Hyderabad; of the preparation and the process of eating West Bengal’s prized hilsa; of the ancient art of building fishing boats in Gujarat; of the fiery cuisine and the singular spirit of Kerala’s toddy shops; of the food and the lives of Mumbai’s first peoples; of the history of an old Catholic fishing community in Tamil Nadu; of the hunt for the world’s fastest fish near Goa.

Throughout his travels, Subramanian observes the cosmopolitanism and diverse influences absorbed by India’s coastal cities, the wthdrawing of traditional fishermen from their craft, the corresponding growth of fishing as pure and voluminous commerce, and the degradation of waters and beaches from over-fishing.

Pulsating with pleasure, adventure and discovery, and tempered by nostalgia and loss, Following Fish speaks as eloquently to the armchair traveller as to lovers of the sea and its lore.

The Homecoming – Shashi Warrier

The Homecoming – Shashi Warrier

‘I wonder how the fabric of my life came apart so quickly. It was a rich fabric, something I’d taken great pains and over three decades to weave. We might each recover individually, but the richness of the fabric is gone.’

Javed Sharif returns home to Srinagar for his father’s eighty-fourth birthday. He returns with a sense of well-being, despite troubles, the violence and the bitterly cold weather. Unexpectedly, his dreams of retiring and settling in Kashmir again are shattered by a knock on the door on the day of the birthday party and, as he watches his life unravel, his world will never be the same again.

The Homecoming is the story of one family, but also of the many families in Kashmir whose lives have been destroyed by decades of violence and uncertainty. Deeply moving and disturbingly honest, this is a haunting tale that is political yet profoundly personal, and tells of the pain and suffering that is a result of the cruelty—and ultimately the indifference—of the state.
