Top 10 Mafia Movies

My love for mafia movies started way back in school when i saw “Donnie Brasco”, obviously i had heard of the “Godfather” the novel but reading novel in the 8 th standard was never my thing. But after seeing the movie i was completely blown away and i was obsessed with the mafia world.

Anyone new to the mafia world will probably ask “Is it like the army ?.. like a chain of commands.”

The best answer to this can be answered by the great Al Pachino “ It aaint nothing like the army. The army is some guy you dont kno sends you out to wack some other guy you dont kno.” – Donnie Brasco

The reason why i love mafia is the way it works, the clan hierarchy, the membership, the commission, the drugs/arms trafficking, protection rackets and of course the awesome mafia slangs.

Here’s a little inside look of how a mafia clan works

The Mafia has controlled everything from the street corner drug trade to the highest levels of government. Glorified by movies and television, hounded by law enforcement officials, marked for death by their enemies, mobsters live violent and often brief lives. The Mafia at its core is about one thing — money. Still, there are secret rituals, complicated rules and tangled webs of family loyalty.

This is only the beginning, Watch these top 10 mafia movies to get a real insight on how this organised and dangerous clan works, its really fascinating. Its not Kaboom- crash hero saves the day kinda movie.

It doesn’t get REAL than this.

Charlie’s secret girlfriend Teresa has epilepsy, and so must also be shunned. When Charlie’s uncle Giovanni offers him a restaurant – the first step up the ladder – Charlie is forced to choose between his desire for power, his love for Teresa and his duty to protect his friend Johnny Boy.

#8. Casino

This Martin Scorsese film depicts the Janus-like quality of Las Vegas–it has a glittering, glamorous face, as well as a brutal, cruel one. Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, mobsters who move to Las Vegas to make their mark, live and work in this paradoxical world. Seen through their eyes, each as a foil to the other, the details of mob involvement in the casinos of the 1970′s and ’80′s are revealed. Ace is the smooth operator of the Tangiers casino, while Nicky is his boyhood friend and tough strongman, robbing and shaking down the locals. However, they each have a tragic flaw–Ace falls in love with a hustler, Ginger, and Nicky falls into an ever-deepening spiral of drugs and violence.

#7. The Untouchables

1920′s prohibition Chicago is corrupt from the judges downward. So in going up against Al Capone, Treasury agent Eliot Ness picks just two cops to help him and his accountant colleague. #5. Scarface

An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. After killing a powerful Cuban figure, Montana and company gain the ability to leave their refugee camps and roam around the U.S. After unsuccessfully trying to make it legitamately in the country, Montana and Ray resort to selling cocaine to dealers around the world. Tony’s rise is quick, but as he becomes more powerful, his enemies and his own paranoia begin to plague his empire.

#4. Donnie Brasco

This true story follows FBI agent Joe Pistone as he infiltrates the mafia of New York. Befriending Lefty Ruggiero, Pistone (under the name Donnie Brasco) is able to embed himself in a mafia faction lead by Sonny Black. Ruggiero and Pistone become tight as the group goes about collecting money for ‘the bosses’. Eventually, the group become big time when Black himself becomes a boss, all the while Pistone collects evidence. However, the trials and tribulations of the undercover work become more than Pistone can bear. His marriage falls apart and to top it off, the mafia suspect a mole in the organization. The real dilemma is afforded to Pistone, who knows if he walks away from the mafia, Ruggiero will be the one punished.

#3. Once Upon A Time In America

Epic, episodic, tale of the lives of a small group of New York City Jewish gangsters spanning over 40 years. Told mostly in flashbacks and flash-forwards, the movie centers on small-time hood David ‘Noodles’ Aaronson and his lifelong partners in crime; Max, Cockeye and Patsy and their friends from growing up in the rough Jewish neighborhood of New York’s Lower East Side in the 1920s, to the last years of Prohibition in the early 1930s, and then to the late 1960s where an elderly Noodles returns to New York after many years in hiding to look into the past.

#2. Goodfellas

The lowly, blue-collar side of New York’s Italian mafia is explored in this crime biopic of wiseguy Henry Hill. As he makes his way from strapping young petty criminal, to big-time thief, to middle-aged cocaine addict and dealer, the film explores in detail the rules and traditions of organized crime. Watching the rise and fall of Hill and his two counterparts, the slick jack-of-all-trades criminal Jimmy Conway and the brutish, intimidating Tommy DeVito, this true story realistically explores the core, blue-collar part of the mob.

#1. The Godfather

This was the easiest choice for me – the Godfather has to be numero uno because it is unparalleled in this genre (and virtually all others). Vito Corleone is the aging don (head) of the Corleone Mafia Family. His youngest son Michael has returned from WWII just in time to see the wedding of Connie Corleone (Michael’s sister) to Carlo Rizzi. All of Michael’s family is involved with the Mafia, but Michael just wants to live a normal life. Drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo is looking for Mafia Families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He approaches Don Corleone about it, but, much against the advice of the Don’s lawyer Tom Hagen, the Don is morally against the use of drugs, and turns down the offer. This does not please Sollozzo, who has the Don shot down by some of his hit men. The Don barely survives, which leads his son Michael to begin a violent mob war against Sollozzo and tears the Corleone family apart.

At the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple’s Chief Executive Steve Job announced the features of the most anticipated phone of the year – the 4th generation iPhone.

Yes, its official now, They will soon launch iPhone in an all new avatar.

Recently Apple unveiled plans for the biggest and most exciting iPhone software update yet. iPhone OS 4 will include over 100 new user features for iPhone and iPod touch owners to enjoy. And for developers, a new software development kit (SDK) offers over 1500 new APIs to create apps that are even more powerful, innovative, and amazing.

What’s new:

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed:

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. • An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery

Top 10 Robbery Movies !!

Top 10 robbery movies. there is a difference between a heist and robbery.

Robbery is the old classic ‘con’ man art, done with style, precision, planing and perfection.

Here are my top 10 classy robbery movies!!

10# The Thomas Crown Affair

Nearly any thief can steal a priceless piece of art, but it takes a criminal mastermind to return the item to the scene of the crime while everyone is watching. That’s precisely what wealthy socialite Thomas (Pierce Brosnan) Crown does when he infiltrates a highly secure New York museum with a team of identically dressed accomplices.

Any thing Pierce Brosnan does turns out real sexy as the man does it with such precise elegance and planning…..perfection!! Don’t wanna ruin the ending for you, but suffice it to say that the ensuing game of cat and mouse is nearly as priceless as the painting he bags.

9# The Italian Job

The best scenes are the ones that happen in broad daylight. That’s precisely what transpires in The Italian Job when a daring group of thieves use a little cunning and a whole lot of explosives to steal a safe right under the noses of three gun-wielding guards. The ensuing high-speed boat chase through Venice provides a welcome burst of adrenaline to offset the film’s slower moments. It highlights a group of specialist thieves doin what they do best not to mention the song “Money” by Pink Floyd that comes rite after the loot, just make you love the scene, the characters and the movie !!

8# Entrapment

Catherine Zeta-Jones proves that technology is no match for acrobatics as she bobs :P and weaves her way through a series of criss-crossing infrared security beams in order to steal a priceless Chinese mask. Her fabulous flexibility and remarkably sensual movements elevate this heist film into a stunning work of art.

Alright lets get things in perspective, Catherine Zeta Jones in a cat suit, looking stunning, doin all the acrobatic and flexible moves with all the ‘ooomph’ and sensuality…….damn i’m drooling on my keyboard again !!

7# Point Break

Anyone can rob a bank while wearing a woolly balaclava, but it takes real chutzpah to hold one up while dressed as Ronald Reagan or Richard Nixon. The so-called “ex-presidents” gang made it into the list of the top 10 scores by injecting a bit of colorful bravado into the deadly business of burglarizing banks.

6# Heat

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, two biggest names on the planet come together to turn this movie into a masterpiece. The plot is brilliant and the tension and the thrill will sweep you off your feet in anxiety!! Pure Brilliance !!

Even the most brilliantly conceived robberies don’t always go according to plan. Neil McCauley’s carefully planned armored car heist turns into a bloodbath when a new recruit murders a guard, thereby requiring McCauley and his men to execute the remaining witnesses. The scene is a harbinger of things to come as the group engages in another deadly shootout toward the film’s explosive conclusion.

5# The Dark Knight

I think i cannot even begin to describe the thrilling and brilliant robbery portrayed in this flick. From the plot to the characters to the action to the background music score….every thing is spot on perfect !!

The only thing more terrifying than clowns are clowns with grappling hooks and semi-automatic weapons. This frightening vision comes to life in the first six minutes of The Dark Knight as The Joker and his crew make an armed withdrawal at a Gotham bank.

4# The Score

This film represents the first (and last) time Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro appeared in the same film, and watching the two Hollywood heavyweights together is a rare treat that every cinephile should indulge in.

This movie one of my all time favorites. It has this real great mix of elements of new and old.

De Niro uses cutting-edge technology and good old-fashion cunning to break into Montreal’s heavily guarded customs house……. an absolute delight to watch!!

3# Inside Man

This one is a bit hard to categorize as there was no robbery involved, Confused!!! This one is a brillliant set up and will keep you on the edge of you seat at all times…..do not miss a single scene!!

When is a bank robbery not a bank robbery? When it’s a brilliant diversion, of course. Master criminal Dalton Russell gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “inside man” when he stages an elaborate bank robbery allowing him to set up residence in the building’s basement completely undetected. The ensuing heist is all the more sweet thanks to the careful planning and remarkable patience that go into its execution.

2# Ocean’s 11, 12 & 13

This trilogy is filled with brilliant and amazing concepts involving a mix of modern and classic approach. It features one of the best directed scenes and real suitable back ground score.

Definitly missing on something if you havent seen this one!!

One of the best scenes in Ocean’s 13 is when Danny Ocean and his crew momentarily disable his security system of the Vegas casino by simulating an earthquake. The security breach costs Banks a cool $500 million, making it far and away the biggest heist in our list of the top 10 scores. Sure, it’s a bit far-fetched, but the film is so stylish and fun that you barely even notice.

1# The Sting

The Sting claims first place on the list of the top 10 scores for having the most elegant scheme. Gondorff (Paul Newman) and Hooker (Robert Redford) manage to swindle Chicago crime boss Doyle Lonnegan when they organize a wire game, an elaborate scam in which a sizable group of con artists create a simulated wire store where the results from horse races are received by telegram and posted on a large board. The results, of course, are determined in advance by the con men, who in turn give their marks a number of surefire betting tips to build up their confidence before bilking them for a large sum of money on a piece of carefully calculated misinformation. Gondorff and Hooker execute the con to perfection and even add an unexpected twist at the end to ensure they’ll never again have to worry about Lonnegan or his goons.

P.S. – All the movies on this list are a must watch, Get your copy today !!!!

October Sky (Movie)

“Sometimes one dream is enough to light up the whole sky”

Life is all about dreaming and working in order to watch them come true. A boy who could see the future… A father stuck in the past… A dream that wouldn’t die… “October Sky” is a true story of a boy who lived in a small town of Coalwood, United States during 1950’s.

Plot: Homer Hickam is a kid with only one future in sight, to work in the local coalmine like his father. However in October 1957, everything changes when the first artificial satellite, Sputnik goes into orbit. Built by USSR, the arch rival of US in the Cold War Era, Sputnik proves to be a milestone in the history of mankind. While the entire world gasped at this tremendous feat, Homer makes plans of his own. He, along with his three other friends decides to make their own Rocket. Once an average school kid, Homer now starts taking interest in Maths and Rocket science. He now have dreams… a dream to shoot a rocket of his own… a dream go for higher studies… a dream to live a life out of the coal mines.

But every dream has a price to pay. These “Rocket Boys” are not taken seriously by any of the residents of Coalwood, most of which think they are doing nothing but wasting their time, money and most importantly their youth. For Homer it gets even worse as his father never consider him capable of doing anything outstanding and that he is now selling time in mindless crap. Only Miss Riley, one of his school teacher who believes in his dreams, becomes the only source of inspiration.

She enlightens him saying “As long as you are alive on this planet you have a choice” and that “Sometimes you can’t just listen to what anybody else says… you just gotta listen inside”. This motivation pulls Homer out of the mines and restart over his dream project with even more heart, desperation and courage. But is this motivation enough to make Homer watch his dreams come true? Will he be able to fly a rocket of his own? Can these Rocket Boys prove it to the world that impossible is nothing?

blah

Based on the novel “Rocket Boys” written by Homer Hickman himself, October Sky is a true story and one of the best inspirational movie I have ever seen. It is a family film for the ages, encouraging the highest potential of the human spirit while giving viewers a clear view of a bygone era when “the final frontier” beckoned to the explorer in all of us. If you ever had a dream but you never had a clue what it takes to fulfill it, then this movie is for you to get going !!!

Today, Homer Hadley Hickam, Jr. (born February 19, 1943) is an American author, Vietnam veteran, and a former NASA engineer. His autobiographical novel Rocket Boys: A Memoir, was a #1 New York Times Best Seller, is studied in many American and international school systems. Now that’s what I call a performance :)

And hey, have you noticed that “October Sky” is an anagram of “Rocket Boys” ;) !!!

Top 5 Aamir Khan Stunner’s

Aamir Khan, one of THE most finest actors in Bollywood today, has never failed to deliver when it comes to making a great movie.

Be it a producer, director or an actor he mesmerizes and leaves you entertained by his work. One great thing about Aamir is that he never tries to steal the show like most bollywood actors, he is a team player and concentrates on the movie and uses the supporting cast very well.

Here’s my top 5 Aamir Khan stunner’s.

5. Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)

Absolutely one of the most brilliant films especially in 2001. It was an eye opener for bollywood and the desi junta (people), it left people glued to their seats in excitement and thrill. It embarked Bollywood internationally as it was nominated for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film after Mother India.

The movie is set in the Victorian period of the British Raj and revolves around the peasants from a barren village who are oppressed by high taxes imposed by the British. When the peasants attempt to persuade the officers to reduce the taxes, the officers put forth a proposition to the peasants. One senior officer offers to cancel their taxes for three years if their village team beats him at cricket. After accepting his proposition, the villagers face the arduous task of learning the game and playing for a result that will change their village’s destiny.

All the cast members did a real brilliant job. From directing to songs to the story line to the performances all was very entertaining and you will never forget this movie.

4. Sarfarosh (1999)

This was THE film that restored my faith in Hindi movies, this movie was not your typical “Bollywood hungama” types. This movie had a real message which was brilliantly portrayed by excellent and well rounded acting by the cast and some actual research on the plot.

Directed by John Matthew Matthan, who started working on Sarfarosh in 1992. Seven years were spent on the research, pre-production and production till it finally released in 1999 (which is one of the reasons why the movie was superb).

The film dealt with an Indian police officer’s fight to stop cross-border terrorism.

Ajay Singh’s brother is killed and his father brain damaged by terrorists when Ajay is a small boy, because his father was going to stand up against them in court or something. Ajay takes this to heart (as you would), and as a young adult he devotes himself to becoming a police inspector and fighting against crime, and terrorists in particular. The movie is essentially about one case, where Ajay has to get to the roots of an operation smuggling guns into the country.

The movie also stars Naseeruddin Shah and Sonali Bendre.

For me this movie is as good as any Hollywood movie such as “The Blood Diamond” or “Few Good Men” etc. The movie has substance, a great plot and very very convincing characters.

3. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

Akash (Aamir Khan), Sameer (Saif Ali Khan) and Siddharth aka Sid (Akshaye Khanna), three close friends, have completed their education and are on the threshold of life. Akash does not believe in love. He is a flirt and his love affairs do not last for more than a month. Sameer believes in love. He is always carrying his heart on his palm and falling in love every time. But he still has not found that special girl. Sid, a painter, is the most sensitive and mature among the three. He knows the true meaning of love. He finds love in everything, everywhere and everytime. All three are enjoying life. Then comes the twist when Sid falls in love with older woman Tara Jaiswal (Dimple Kapadia), an interior designer, who is a divorcee. Akash is not able to understand the depth of Sid’s love and hurts his sentiments for which Sid slaps Akash, thus creating a rfit between the two friends. Sameer tries to bridge the gap but is unsuccessful.Sid leaves for a painting workshop at Kaushali. Akash leaves for Australia for his dad’s business. On the flight, he meets Shalini (Preity Zinta), who he had briefly known earlier. Their friendship slowly blossoms into love. Meanwhile Sameer also finds his special girl in Pooja (Sonali Kulkarni), whom he wants to marry. Time has passed. All three friends are again in the same town — but things are different for them now.

2001 was the year when Aamir Khan turned from a good actor to a great actor, two mega releases “Laagan” and “Dil Chahta hai”…..both these movies were a real big eye opener for the industry and the common people.

The first film written and directed by Farhan Akhtar. The movie was based on a similar experience of Akhtar’s friends.

Dil Chahta hai is a wonderful story of three young friends and it focuses on a major period of transition in the lives. It is set in modern-day urban Mumbai and portrays contemporary Indian youth as cosmopolitan and urban who have a fun and chilled out life style.

The movie was a great hit with the crowd because the youth was modern and open to new life style and ideas which bollywood was failing to accomplish, the best example for this is portrayal of “Rahul” by Sharukh Khan in “Kutch Kutch Hota hai”, the movie was real fun at that time but the times had changed, Dil Chahta hai was a real freah breather for the industry as it changed the format.

Another great thing about this movie is the fresh new songs, the awesome trio : Shankar, Ehsaan and Lyod, need i speak more.

The movie stars Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta.

This is one of my all time favorite movies and i can still relate to it.

2. Taare Zameen Par (2007)

This is a very special film for me, this is the movie i really relate to the most, it reminds of me something that i been through in my life, somewhere deep within it felt like “that’s me”. Ishaan Nandkishore Awasthi is basically a glimpse of ourselves.

This was a debut for Aamir Khan as director, but the real credit goes to Gupte and Bhatia who put seven years of work and research into developing the film.

Aamir Khan shows his talent not just as an actor but a very versatile and intelligent. Oscar Wilde, Leonardo da Vinci and Sally Gardner were hardly ever heard of in Hindi cinema before this. It’s two-thumbs up for Shanker Ehsaan Loy. The title song is fascinating. Maa and Jame Raho combine talents in all respects- music, words and voice.

Taare Zameen Par is a story of a young Dyslexic Kid Ishaan Awasthi, who is unable to comprehend things that is taught to him in school and ends up being a duffer, unworthy child in his entire School. His parents too fail to realize his real problem and held’s his carelessness and negligence responsible for his derogatory performance in his studies. He is shifted to a boarding school by his Dad after his Dad gets enough of Ishaan’s complaints from the school. This breaks Ishaan fully and he loses all his young budding hopes filled in those innocent eyes of his, until he meets his new Art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) in his Boarding school. Ram understands the problem Ishaan faces and also discovers an amazing talent hidden in Ishaan. Ram very soon realizes the fact that he is the only Hope in the sinking life of Ishaan. Now he has to help Ishaan in making him realize his Young dreams once again……

The casting is good, well justified and well acted and little Darsheel steals the show. Aamir Khan, however stuns the audience by appearing at almost near half of the film. That’s the surprise but you don’t miss Aamir in the first half because Darsheel will definitely grab your attention and Aamir gets to show some good directorial talent.

1. Rang De Basanti (2006)

THE film that stirred the nation…..the film that awakened India.

It was a fantastic movie especially how the story was depicted and how the past and present met in the middle. I’m a big fan of this movie and it left such an afterthought for me that i couldn’t watch it again…purely out of respect and the depth(which only an Indian can understand) it had.

written and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra who put seven years to research and develop the story, including three to write the script.

The movie has such deep Indian youth rebel feel to it that it makes you wanna think and derive conclusions from facts.

RANG DE BASANTI is a story about the youth of India today. A young, London based film- maker chances upon the diaries of her grandfather, who served in the British police force in India during the freedom struggle. Excited about these memoirs, she makes plans to shoot a film on the Indian revolutionaries mentioned in the diaries. She comes down to Delhi, and casts a group of five friends to play the pivotal roles of these revolutionaries. However, products of modern India, the five youngsters initially refuse to be part of the project, as they don’t identify with these characters from the past. Not surprising, considering that they’re part of a generation of Indians that believes in consumerism. To them issues like patriotism and giving one’s life for one’s beliefs is the stuff stuffy text- books are made of. They would rather party than be patriots. In the film both the 1930’s British India and the India Today run parallel and intersect with each other at crucial points. As the film reaches its resolution the line between past and present blur’s, as they become one in spirit.

The brilliance of Aamir Khan is something very difficult to narrate, he has proved it umpteen number of times that he is truly the most versatile actor in the industry. His comic timing in the first part to the true rebellious missionary in the second will keep you stunned. He is extremely fluent even with difficult Punjabi tongue twisters and the acting prowess he has shown would be very difficult to match by anyone around. Yet again Aamir uses his entire cast to bring out the plot in the movie to its best.

Even the music was revolutionary, It had brilliant and very suitable tracks. A.R. Rehman does not need any introductions, one of the best musicians and music directors in the world.

All in all a fantastic mind boggling movie which will have really long after effects.

P.S. – Do not watch this movie at dinner because your food will get cold!!!

In the movie, the great conqueror Akbar (played by Prithviraj Kapoor) and his Rajput wife, Jodha Bai (played by Durga Khote) have a son – the weak and pleasure-loving Salim – played by Dilip Kumar. Salim falls in love with Anarkali (Madhubala), a court-dancer. He wants to marry her, he arranges secret meetings for Anarkali and himself for the sake of love. however the jealous Bahaar, a fellow dancer, who is of a higher rank, wants the crown of India and she attempted to try and make the prince love her so later on she may ascend to queenship. She exposes the love between the prince and the dancer, Salim pleads for Anarkali’s hand, but his father objects and throws Anarkali into prison. Despite imprisonment, Anarkali refuses to reject Salim.

Salim rebels against his father, is defeated in battle, and is sentenced to death. Anarkali pleads for his life in exchange for her own, and is condemned to be walled up alive. However, it is revealed that Akbar owed a favor to Anarkali’s mother, since she informed him of the birth of his son. Anarkali’s mother takes advantage of this, and begs for her daughter’s life. The emperor relents, and arranges for Anarkali’s secret escape into exile. Unfortunately, it is still announced that Anarkali was killed, and Salim is heartbroken.

Most tales of Salim and Anarkali end with the death of the latter, even though the movie version is slightly more optimistic. However, Salim is still left to believe that Anarkali is dead and the lovers are separated for the rest of their lives.
