Top 5 Aamir Khan Stunner’s

Aamir Khan, one of THE most finest actors in Bollywood today, has never failed to deliver when it comes to making a great movie.

Be it a producer, director or an actor he mesmerizes and leaves you entertained by his work. One great thing about Aamir is that he never tries to steal the show like most bollywood actors, he is a team player and concentrates on the movie and uses the supporting cast very well.

Here’s my top 5 Aamir Khan stunner’s.

5. Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)

Absolutely one of the most brilliant films especially in 2001. It was an eye opener for bollywood and the desi junta (people), it left people glued to their seats in excitement and thrill. It embarked Bollywood internationally as it was nominated for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film after Mother India.

The movie is set in the Victorian period of the British Raj and revolves around the peasants from a barren village who are oppressed by high taxes imposed by the British. When the peasants attempt to persuade the officers to reduce the taxes, the officers put forth a proposition to the peasants. One senior officer offers to cancel their taxes for three years if their village team beats him at cricket. After accepting his proposition, the villagers face the arduous task of learning the game and playing for a result that will change their village’s destiny.

All the cast members did a real brilliant job. From directing to songs to the story line to the performances all was very entertaining and you will never forget this movie.

4. Sarfarosh (1999)

This was THE film that restored my faith in Hindi movies, this movie was not your typical “Bollywood hungama” types. This movie had a real message which was brilliantly portrayed by excellent and well rounded acting by the cast and some actual research on the plot.

Directed by John Matthew Matthan, who started working on Sarfarosh in 1992. Seven years were spent on the research, pre-production and production till it finally released in 1999 (which is one of the reasons why the movie was superb).

The film dealt with an Indian police officer’s fight to stop cross-border terrorism.

Ajay Singh’s brother is killed and his father brain damaged by terrorists when Ajay is a small boy, because his father was going to stand up against them in court or something. Ajay takes this to heart (as you would), and as a young adult he devotes himself to becoming a police inspector and fighting against crime, and terrorists in particular. The movie is essentially about one case, where Ajay has to get to the roots of an operation smuggling guns into the country.

The movie also stars Naseeruddin Shah and Sonali Bendre.

For me this movie is as good as any Hollywood movie such as “The Blood Diamond” or “Few Good Men” etc. The movie has substance, a great plot and very very convincing characters.

3. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

Akash (Aamir Khan), Sameer (Saif Ali Khan) and Siddharth aka Sid (Akshaye Khanna), three close friends, have completed their education and are on the threshold of life. Akash does not believe in love. He is a flirt and his love affairs do not last for more than a month. Sameer believes in love. He is always carrying his heart on his palm and falling in love every time. But he still has not found that special girl. Sid, a painter, is the most sensitive and mature among the three. He knows the true meaning of love. He finds love in everything, everywhere and everytime. All three are enjoying life. Then comes the twist when Sid falls in love with older woman Tara Jaiswal (Dimple Kapadia), an interior designer, who is a divorcee. Akash is not able to understand the depth of Sid’s love and hurts his sentiments for which Sid slaps Akash, thus creating a rfit between the two friends. Sameer tries to bridge the gap but is unsuccessful.Sid leaves for a painting workshop at Kaushali. Akash leaves for Australia for his dad’s business. On the flight, he meets Shalini (Preity Zinta), who he had briefly known earlier. Their friendship slowly blossoms into love. Meanwhile Sameer also finds his special girl in Pooja (Sonali Kulkarni), whom he wants to marry. Time has passed. All three friends are again in the same town — but things are different for them now.

2001 was the year when Aamir Khan turned from a good actor to a great actor, two mega releases “Laagan” and “Dil Chahta hai”…..both these movies were a real big eye opener for the industry and the common people.

The first film written and directed by Farhan Akhtar. The movie was based on a similar experience of Akhtar’s friends.

Dil Chahta hai is a wonderful story of three young friends and it focuses on a major period of transition in the lives. It is set in modern-day urban Mumbai and portrays contemporary Indian youth as cosmopolitan and urban who have a fun and chilled out life style.

The movie was a great hit with the crowd because the youth was modern and open to new life style and ideas which bollywood was failing to accomplish, the best example for this is portrayal of “Rahul” by Sharukh Khan in “Kutch Kutch Hota hai”, the movie was real fun at that time but the times had changed, Dil Chahta hai was a real freah breather for the industry as it changed the format.

Another great thing about this movie is the fresh new songs, the awesome trio : Shankar, Ehsaan and Lyod, need i speak more.

The movie stars Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta.

This is one of my all time favorite movies and i can still relate to it.

2. Taare Zameen Par (2007)

This is a very special film for me, this is the movie i really relate to the most, it reminds of me something that i been through in my life, somewhere deep within it felt like “that’s me”. Ishaan Nandkishore Awasthi is basically a glimpse of ourselves.

This was a debut for Aamir Khan as director, but the real credit goes to Gupte and Bhatia who put seven years of work and research into developing the film.

Aamir Khan shows his talent not just as an actor but a very versatile and intelligent. Oscar Wilde, Leonardo da Vinci and Sally Gardner were hardly ever heard of in Hindi cinema before this. It’s two-thumbs up for Shanker Ehsaan Loy. The title song is fascinating. Maa and Jame Raho combine talents in all respects- music, words and voice.

Taare Zameen Par is a story of a young Dyslexic Kid Ishaan Awasthi, who is unable to comprehend things that is taught to him in school and ends up being a duffer, unworthy child in his entire School. His parents too fail to realize his real problem and held’s his carelessness and negligence responsible for his derogatory performance in his studies. He is shifted to a boarding school by his Dad after his Dad gets enough of Ishaan’s complaints from the school. This breaks Ishaan fully and he loses all his young budding hopes filled in those innocent eyes of his, until he meets his new Art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) in his Boarding school. Ram understands the problem Ishaan faces and also discovers an amazing talent hidden in Ishaan. Ram very soon realizes the fact that he is the only Hope in the sinking life of Ishaan. Now he has to help Ishaan in making him realize his Young dreams once again……

The casting is good, well justified and well acted and little Darsheel steals the show. Aamir Khan, however stuns the audience by appearing at almost near half of the film. That’s the surprise but you don’t miss Aamir in the first half because Darsheel will definitely grab your attention and Aamir gets to show some good directorial talent.

1. Rang De Basanti (2006)

THE film that stirred the nation…..the film that awakened India.

It was a fantastic movie especially how the story was depicted and how the past and present met in the middle. I’m a big fan of this movie and it left such an afterthought for me that i couldn’t watch it again…purely out of respect and the depth(which only an Indian can understand) it had.

written and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra who put seven years to research and develop the story, including three to write the script.

The movie has such deep Indian youth rebel feel to it that it makes you wanna think and derive conclusions from facts.

RANG DE BASANTI is a story about the youth of India today. A young, London based film- maker chances upon the diaries of her grandfather, who served in the British police force in India during the freedom struggle. Excited about these memoirs, she makes plans to shoot a film on the Indian revolutionaries mentioned in the diaries. She comes down to Delhi, and casts a group of five friends to play the pivotal roles of these revolutionaries. However, products of modern India, the five youngsters initially refuse to be part of the project, as they don’t identify with these characters from the past. Not surprising, considering that they’re part of a generation of Indians that believes in consumerism. To them issues like patriotism and giving one’s life for one’s beliefs is the stuff stuffy text- books are made of. They would rather party than be patriots. In the film both the 1930’s British India and the India Today run parallel and intersect with each other at crucial points. As the film reaches its resolution the line between past and present blur’s, as they become one in spirit.

The brilliance of Aamir Khan is something very difficult to narrate, he has proved it umpteen number of times that he is truly the most versatile actor in the industry. His comic timing in the first part to the true rebellious missionary in the second will keep you stunned. He is extremely fluent even with difficult Punjabi tongue twisters and the acting prowess he has shown would be very difficult to match by anyone around. Yet again Aamir uses his entire cast to bring out the plot in the movie to its best.

Even the music was revolutionary, It had brilliant and very suitable tracks. A.R. Rehman does not need any introductions, one of the best musicians and music directors in the world.

All in all a fantastic mind boggling movie which will have really long after effects.

P.S. – Do not watch this movie at dinner because your food will get cold!!!

Dr. Bookworm:How to write Your Own Fantasy

There was a noose around my neck and the background music was ‘Sometimes I feel Like I been tied to the whipping post’. Suddenly there was a robo-soldier on the whipping post. As soon as he tried to clinch the lever, a tiny canon ball cut the rope around my neck and I started flying like a paper in dust storm. In next moment I was standing on a mountain top and from that top I was able to watch the roundness of earth. I sat there for a while and when I looked beneath, I saw my naked body lying on a bed. A woman clad in green gown was drilling my heart but to my surprise there was no blood and for her surprise there was no heart. That’s my latest day dream and I was not able to interpret it until I opted for my favorite Babaji “Dr.Bookworm“.
Dr.Bookworm informed me with a big smile, “You are the victim of fantasy writing bug, My Son! “
Me : You mean I am going to be richi-rich like J K Rowling.(I was too excited )
Dr.Bookworm: No you can’t be, because in India nobody takes so much pain to line up in middle of night for a book release. So don’t be so excited, you might be a big writer but you can’t be as big as The Great Khali.
These words pinned my ballooned-excitement. And my face was like a kookaburra ball after big hitting session by Sachin-Sehwag.
Me: It’s okie baba ji, I got you intentions but first tell me the interpretations of my latest dream. (The above mentioned dream)
Dr.Bookworm: Noose around your neck means your hard-hitting job as a s/w developer and your free flow as a paper means your current profession as a blogger.
Me: What a interpretation baba ji.Jai ho! Jai ho!
Dr.Bookworm: Calm down balak, don’t sing Jai Ho! Otherwise Rehman Saab will sue you for copyright.
Me: okie Babaji, but what about the girl thing.
Dr.Bookworm: This girl likes you and she is trying hard to impress you but it seems you are heartless towards her.
Me : ohhhhh! May be but why she was in green gown?
Dr.Bookworm : I think you are a big supporter of green revolution against Global warming that’s why girl is in green gown.
So now my main purpose to come to Dr. Bookworm was over but I want to know more about my new career prospect as a fiction writer and Dr.Bookworm was the best candidate to guide me towards the path of Moksha(Richi-rich path of J K Rowling:)). So I insisted him to give me some guidance on fantasy. Then he dived into more philosophical mood and asked me, “Can you tell me the difference between the Harry Potter Series and the data reports you are making as your daily job?”
Me (I was shocked by this kind of comparison): Everything is different, from content to context.
Dr.Bookworm: Which language Harry potter and your reports are in?
Me: English
Dr.Bookworm: Means same kind of alphabets.
Me: Yes. I know that but why are you telling me this thing (It seemed to me that summer effect was too harsh on Dr.Bookworm’s mind)
Dr.Bookworm: Let me tell you the basic difference between these two. You reports describe the visible things but Harry Potter series shows you the invisible.
Me: What do you mean by visible and invisible things and how they are related to fantasy writing?
Dr. Bookworm: A good fantasy need clear vision on invisible things and a great canvas to draw those invisible things. It was the fantasy of J.R.R Tolkien which had created the most fascinated place, since than uncountable eyes have seen that invisible world of fantasy. It was invisible for everyone before J.R.Tolkien’s fantasy draws it on the canvas of The Lord of the Ring.
Me: So you mean to create a fantasy one must able to see the invisible surrounding us, is it?
Dr. Bookworm : yeah…to create a fantasy you must see the invisible surrounding you but without proper canvas you can’t able to draw those invisible things. By canvas I mean proper words, ideas to write your own fantasy.
Me : So my day-dreams and fantasies prompt you that I might be a fantasy writer because I am able to see the invisible, but lots of people have fantasies but why they not able to write?
Dr.Bookworm: Because they are not familiar with the canvas, they are not familiar with the fantasy genre, they don’t like to take the walk into the world created by so many artists and I think that’s the basic problem with you and your fantasies, you are good in watching invisible things but you are bad in drawing those things, so first read and feel the depth of fantasy genre than only you can able to write your own fantasy.
So that’s how I got the recommended list of fantasy novels from Dr.Bookworm.I am sharing this list for potential richi-rich novelists.
Highly Recommended

1. Lord Of the Rings Trilogy by J R R Tolkein(1954)

The all-time greatest work of fantasy by a Middle-Earth mile, Lord of the Rings is a classic story of good versus evil. Sauron, the Dark Lord, has all of the Rings of Power except one. A hobbit is given the task of destroying the Ring in the Cracks of Doom. He and his companions undertake a perilous journey to fend off evil.

2.’Harry Potter’ Series by J K Rowling (1997-2007)

The series kicks off with Harry’s aunt and uncle trying to hide his true destiny from him, but to no avail. He is summoned to an infamous school for wizards when he proves to be a shining light. Destiny awaits and adventure begins.

3.Chandrakanta by Devaki Nandan Khatri(1920s)

One of finest work of romantic fantasy by Indian author. So many characters and magical Tilisms. The tele-serial was not even had the 1 % excitement and magic as the novel has.

4. The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe by C S Lewis(1950)

Four English school children who step into a magical wardrobe and end up in the enchanted land of Narnia . There they meet Aslan, the golden lion, and find that eternal winter that has cursed the land.
5. The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King(1982-present)

.
Dark Tower series is Stephen King’s most fantasy-oriented work. The first and most popular in the series can be read as a stand-alone – a brooding dreamscape of good versus evil. At odds with each other is the eponymous Gunslinger and the evil Man in Black.

6. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke(2004

In 1808 England’s only two ‘practical magicians’ set out to thwart pesky Corsican usurper Napoleon. The stubbornly conservative Mr Norrell and his colorful apprentice Jonathan Strange eventually take the course of magic in different directions, all the while with a conniving faerie looking on. Full of energy and very comparable to Rowling’s Harry Potter novels.

7. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger(2003)

A gentlemanly librarian has to cope with his ‘chrono displacement disorder’ – a time tripping disease with no respect for basic human dignity. Aside from running into himself a few times, he also unknowingly first encounters his future wife when she is only six.

8. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez(1967)

The best intellectual fantasy ever written. It is the story of a century in the village of Macondo and the descendants of its founder José Arcadio Buendía. The underpinning struggle is the story of political conflict in Latin America. In Macondo, however, just about anything can happen – from the sublime to unreal and comic to tragic.

9. His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman(1995-2000)

An intricately plotted fantasy trilogy in which a girl sets out in the company of her daemon to the Far North in pursuit of kidnappers. Set in a superbly developed alternative universe full of shadowy corners. The Golden Compass(2007) movie was inspired by this trilogy only.

10. Dark Elf Trilogy by R A Salvatore(1990-1991)

Set in the ‘Forgotten Realms’ universe,Drizzt Do’Urden is a dark elf of the Drow who basically would like to reform his somewhat evil and nasty race. His first years of schooling and warrior training are depicted in Homeland, followed closely by Exileand Sojourn.
Some other Recommendations:-
1. The GameWorld Trilogy by Sumit Basu
2.The Woman Who Thought She Was a Planet and other Stories by Vandana Singh
3.The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan
4.Charlie & the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
5.The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
PS :- After the recommendation by Dr.Bookworm,I am looking forward for a career as a fantasy writer and my first book will be ‘Adventure of Dr.Bookworm in Nonsense City’

My Filmy Boss and His Business Philosophy

I was very excited about my new job as a blogger. But for my friends and family it was like one of the most stupid and dangerous decision I ever made. I asked one of my best buddy - “Kumar why the hell you thought it was stupid to work as a blogger”. He replied “because blogging needs creativity and wittiness and your height is too much to be Woody Allen.

It was not shocking at all. I know he is just another curious case of jealous monk and I continued. I started working as a blogger on FlipGraph and my days were just going fine. My every word was earning me a full bounty.

One day my boss invited me along with two other guys for dinner at his place. After dinner, we had a plan to watch back to back movies.

The Movie plan was kind of weird for me. I had heard some flying news about his Bollywood love but his love seemed a little bit doubtful to me (Woody Allen’s greatest advice was kind of boozing in my ears “Sex between two is good but between five it’s just awesome“)

A wake up call for me and I immediately called my friend cum advisor ‘Romie’ (He is like ‘Ashok Kumar’ of ‘Ek Choti Si Baat’ for me). He laughed and said (while rolling his eyes) - “It looks like your turn. Whenever boss needs to fire or promote someone, he always calls the victim for a movie at his place. Whats the deal with you??”

He further explained – “As you know he is big movie buff he will judge your performance and your ability by your movie choice.” After a silence of a minute or so, I asked Romie – “Did you also go through this kind of review before? Romie replied – “Yeah buddy, don’t worry about it and now that we are talking about it, let me tell you which movies you must avoid watching with your boss.

Well this might help you as well if you ever need to go through such a test!!

1. Golmaal(1979):- You are going to be trapped if you choose this. It shows you are not good in planning, your every plan has some loop holes. Remember Ram Prasad in this movie? Every bloody plan had a loop hole. It would reveal you are not able to tackle and cover up the most toughest situations, Remember Ram Prasad getting trapped while enjoying halwa? (Well I never thought this way about Golmaal)

2. Aitraaz(2004):- Want to watch it with boss? Most pathetic choice? If you agree with the theme of movie like Akshay not accepting the opportunities awarded to him, you are not a good business developer. You are not able to handle and lock good situations. You are morally weak in terms of business decisions. Hmmmmm……
.

3. Metro(2007):-If you have sympathy with Sharman Joshi in this movie, than pack your bags and go home. You are directly standing against your boss and you are too much into emotions while making decisions.

4. Waqt(1965):-If you enjoyed Balraj Sahani’s performance in the song ‘Ai meri zohrajabeen’,
it means you are sheer careless about your responsibilities. You are not a good strategist an
d your back-up plans are just garbage.

5. Baazigar(1993):- A Must watch with the boss. It shows a well, determined young mind (SRK acting as Vicky). He is ready to take risks, he uses his connections to bring the best business and more over his plans are flawless in terms of execution. The HR-policy of his father-in-law’s company shows how can 1 wrong guy recruited at a key position can ruin your whole business :-) .

Romie’s excellent explanations enlightened me completely. For now, I have shortlisted two movies to watch with him. 1) Avtaar (* Rajesh Khanna) AND 2) Avatar (*James Cameron). Any suggestions why and which one would be better? No? I would cover in my next post :-) .

This event starts the spiral of poverty and hardship which Radha endures. The conditions of the loan are disputed but the village elders decide in favour of the moneylender after which Shamu and Radha are forced to pay three quarters of their crop as interest on the loan of 500 rupees.

Whilst trying to bring more of their land into use to alleviate their poverty, Shamu’s arms are crushed by a boulder. He is ashamed of his helplessness and is humiliated by others in the village, deciding that he is no use to his family he leaves and does not return. Soon after this, Radha’s mother-in-law dies.

Radha continues to work in the fields with her children and gives birth again. Sukhilala offers to help alleviate her poverty in return for Radha marrying him, but she refuses to “sell herself”. A storm sweeps through the village destroying the harvest and killing Radha’s youngest child – the villagers start to migrate but decide to stay and rebuild on the urging of Radha.

The film then skips forward several years to when Radha’s two surviving children, Birju (Sunil Dutt) and Ramu (Rajendra Kumar), are young men. Birju, embittered by the exactions of Sukhilala since he was a child takes out his frustrations by pestering the village girls, especially Sukhilala’s daughter. Ramu, by contrast, has a calmer temper and is married soon after. He becomes a father but his wife is soon absorbed into the cycle of poverty in the family.

Birju’s anger finally becomes dangerous and, after being provoked, attacks Sukhilala and his daughter lashing out at his family. He is chased out of the village and becomes a bandit. On the day of the wedding of Sukhilala’s daughter, Birju returns to take his revenge. He kills Sukhilala and takes his daughter – but Radha, who had promised that Birju would not do harm, shoots Birju who dies in her arms. The film ends with her opening of the canal and reddish water flowing into the fields.

The film was India’s first submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958, and was chosen as one of the five nominations for the category. The film came close to winning the award, but eventually lost to Frederico Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria by a single vote.

Record held for 15 years. Net Gross Rs. 5,50,00,000.

The film re-tells a popular Indian tale, which was previously filmed as Loves of a Mughal Prince (1928) and Anarkali (1953). It is loosely based on an episode in the life of the Mughal Prince Salim, who went on to become the Emperor Jahangir (r. 1608 – 1627). In the movie, the great conqueror Akbar (played by Prithviraj Kapoor) and his Rajput wife, Jodha Bai (played by Durga Khote) have a son – the weak and pleasure-loving Salim – played by Dilip Kumar. Salim falls in love with Anarkali (Madhubala), a court-dancer. He wants to marry her, he arranges secret meetings for Anarkali and himself for the sake of love. however the jealous Bahaar, a fellow dancer, who is of a higher rank, wants the crown of India and she attempted to try and make the prince love her so later on she may ascend to queenship. She exposes the love between the prince and the dancer, Salim pleads for Anarkali’s hand, but his father objects and throws Anarkali into prison. Despite imprisonment, Anarkali refuses to reject Salim.

Salim rebels against his father, is defeated in battle, and is sentenced to death. Anarkali pleads for his life in exchange for her own, and is condemned to be walled up alive. However, it is revealed that Akbar owed a favor to Anarkali’s mother, since she informed him of the birth of his son. Anarkali’s mother takes advantage of this, and begs for her daughter’s life. The emperor relents, and arranges for Anarkali’s secret escape into exile. Unfortunately, it is still announced that Anarkali was killed, and Salim is heartbroken.

Most tales of Salim and Anarkali end with the death of the latter, even though the movie version is slightly more optimistic. However, Salim is still left to believe that Anarkali is dead and the lovers are separated for the rest of their lives.
