Top 10 Mafia Movies

My love for mafia movies started way back in school when i saw “Donnie Brasco”, obviously i had heard of the “Godfather” the novel but reading novel in the 8 th standard was never my thing. But after seeing the movie i was completely blown away and i was obsessed with the mafia world.

Anyone new to the mafia world will probably ask “Is it like the army ?.. like a chain of commands.”

The best answer to this can be answered by the great Al Pachino “ It aaint nothing like the army. The army is some guy you dont kno sends you out to wack some other guy you dont kno.” – Donnie Brasco

The reason why i love mafia is the way it works, the clan hierarchy, the membership, the commission, the drugs/arms trafficking, protection rackets and of course the awesome mafia slangs.

Here’s a little inside look of how a mafia clan works

The Mafia has controlled everything from the street corner drug trade to the highest levels of government. Glorified by movies and television, hounded by law enforcement officials, marked for death by their enemies, mobsters live violent and often brief lives. The Mafia at its core is about one thing — money. Still, there are secret rituals, complicated rules and tangled webs of family loyalty.

This is only the beginning, Watch these top 10 mafia movies to get a real insight on how this organised and dangerous clan works, its really fascinating. Its not Kaboom- crash hero saves the day kinda movie.

It doesn’t get REAL than this.

When Charlie’s uncle Giovanni offers him a restaurant – the first step up the ladder – Charlie is forced to choose between his desire for power, his love for Teresa and his duty to protect his friend Johnny Boy.

#8. Casino

This Martin Scorsese film depicts the Janus-like quality of Las Vegas–it has a glittering, glamorous face, as well as a brutal, cruel one. Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, mobsters who move to Las Vegas to make their mark, live and work in this paradoxical world. Seen through their eyes, each as a foil to the other, the details of mob involvement in the casinos of the 1970′s and ’80′s are revealed. Ace is the smooth operator of the Tangiers casino, while Nicky is his boyhood friend and tough strongman, robbing and shaking down the locals. However, they each have a tragic flaw–Ace falls in love with a hustler, Ginger, and Nicky falls into an ever-deepening spiral of drugs and violence.

#7. The Untouchables

#5. Scarface

An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. #4. Donnie Brasco

This true story follows FBI agent Joe Pistone as he infiltrates the mafia of New York. Befriending Lefty Ruggiero, Pistone (under the name Donnie Brasco) is able to embed himself in a mafia faction lead by Sonny Black. Ruggiero and Pistone become tight as the group goes about collecting money for ‘the bosses’. Eventually, the group become big time when Black himself becomes a boss, all the while Pistone collects evidence. However, the trials and tribulations of the undercover work become more than Pistone can bear. His marriage falls apart and to top it off, the mafia suspect a mole in the organization. The real dilemma is afforded to Pistone, who knows if he walks away from the mafia, Ruggiero will be the one punished.

#3. Once Upon A Time In America

Epic, episodic, tale of the lives of a small group of New York City Jewish gangsters spanning over 40 years. Told mostly in flashbacks and flash-forwards, the movie centers on small-time hood David ‘Noodles’ Aaronson and his lifelong partners in crime; Max, Cockeye and Patsy and their friends from growing up in the rough Jewish neighborhood of New York’s Lower East Side in the 1920s, to the last years of Prohibition in the early 1930s, and then to the late 1960s where an elderly Noodles returns to New York after many years in hiding to look into the past.

#2. Goodfellas

The lowly, blue-collar side of New York’s Italian mafia is explored in this crime biopic of wiseguy Henry Hill. As he makes his way from strapping young petty criminal, to big-time thief, to middle-aged cocaine addict and dealer, the film explores in detail the rules and traditions of organized crime. Watching the rise and fall of Hill and his two counterparts, the slick jack-of-all-trades criminal Jimmy Conway and the brutish, intimidating Tommy DeVito, this true story realistically explores the core, blue-collar part of the mob.

#1. The Godfather

This was the easiest choice for me – the Godfather has to be numero uno because it is unparalleled in this genre (and virtually all others). Vito Corleone is the aging don (head) of the Corleone Mafia Family. His youngest son Michael has returned from WWII just in time to see the wedding of Connie Corleone (Michael’s sister) to Carlo Rizzi. All of Michael’s family is involved with the Mafia, but Michael just wants to live a normal life. Drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo is looking for Mafia Families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He approaches Don Corleone about it, but, much against the advice of the Don’s lawyer Tom Hagen, the Don is morally against the use of drugs, and turns down the offer. This does not please Sollozzo, who has the Don shot down by some of his hit men. The Don barely survives, which leads his son Michael to begin a violent mob war against Sollozzo and tears the Corleone family apart.

October Sky (Movie)

“Sometimes one dream is enough to light up the whole sky”

Life is all about dreaming and working in order to watch them come true. A boy who could see the future… A father stuck in the past… A dream that wouldn’t die… “October Sky” is a true story of a boy who lived in a small town of Coalwood, United States during 1950’s.

Plot: Homer Hickam is a kid with only one future in sight, to work in the local coalmine like his father. However in October 1957, everything changes when the first artificial satellite, Sputnik goes into orbit. Built by USSR, the arch rival of US in the Cold War Era, Sputnik proves to be a milestone in the history of mankind. While the entire world gasped at this tremendous feat, Homer makes plans of his own. He, along with his three other friends decides to make their own Rocket. Once an average school kid, Homer now starts taking interest in Maths and Rocket science. He now have dreams… a dream to shoot a rocket of his own… a dream go for higher studies… a dream to live a life out of the coal mines.

But every dream has a price to pay. These “Rocket Boys” are not taken seriously by any of the residents of Coalwood, most of which think they are doing nothing but wasting their time, money and most importantly their youth. For Homer it gets even worse as his father never consider him capable of doing anything outstanding and that he is now selling time in mindless crap. Only Miss Riley, one of his school teacher who believes in his dreams, becomes the only source of inspiration.

She enlightens him saying “As long as you are alive on this planet you have a choice” and that “Sometimes you can’t just listen to what anybody else says… you just gotta listen inside”. This motivation pulls Homer out of the mines and restart over his dream project with even more heart, desperation and courage. But is this motivation enough to make Homer watch his dreams come true? Will he be able to fly a rocket of his own? Can these Rocket Boys prove it to the world that impossible is nothing?

blah

Based on the novel “Rocket Boys” written by Homer Hickman himself, October Sky is a true story and one of the best inspirational movie I have ever seen. It is a family film for the ages, encouraging the highest potential of the human spirit while giving viewers a clear view of a bygone era when “the final frontier” beckoned to the explorer in all of us. If you ever had a dream but you never had a clue what it takes to fulfill it, then this movie is for you to get going !!!

Today, Homer Hadley Hickam, Jr. (born February 19, 1943) is an American author, Vietnam veteran, and a former NASA engineer. His autobiographical novel Rocket Boys: A Memoir, was a #1 New York Times Best Seller, is studied in many American and international school systems. Now that’s what I call a performance :)

And hey, have you noticed that “October Sky” is an anagram of “Rocket Boys” ;) !!!

This event starts the spiral of poverty and hardship which Radha endures. The conditions of the loan are disputed but the village elders decide in favour of the moneylender after which Shamu and Radha are forced to pay three quarters of their crop as interest on the loan of 500 rupees.

Whilst trying to bring more of their land into use to alleviate their poverty, Shamu’s arms are crushed by a boulder. On the day of the wedding of Sukhilala’s daughter, Birju returns to take his revenge. It is loosely based on an episode in the life of the Mughal Prince Salim, who went on to become the Emperor Jahangir (r. 1608 – 1627). In the movie, the great conqueror Akbar (played by Prithviraj Kapoor) and his Rajput wife, Jodha Bai (played by Durga Khote) have a son – the weak and pleasure-loving Salim – played by Dilip Kumar. However, it is revealed that Akbar owed a favor to Anarkali’s mother, since she informed him of the birth of his son. Anarkali’s mother takes advantage of this, and begs for her daughter’s life. The emperor relents, and arranges for Anarkali’s secret escape into exile. Unfortunately, it is still announced that Anarkali was killed, and Salim is heartbroken.

Most tales of Salim and Anarkali end with the death of the latter, even though the movie version is slightly more optimistic. However, Salim is still left to believe that Anarkali is dead and the lovers are separated for the rest of their lives.

UP

UP (2009)

For me ,’Up’ is one of the best animated movies from Pixar.

Story is what makes a great movie great, and ‘Up’ definitely has one. Up is by far the most emotional human drama I have ever seen and will have you snuffling and watery eyes in the first ten minutes .This movie will touch your heart and will have an after effect on you.

All in all a great story, great voice talent, great timing and certainly great for all ages.

“By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream to visit the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn’t alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.”

Definitely a must watch!!

Oldboy

I m a fan of Chan-wook Park and OLDBOY is the whole reason for my crazyness about him and his movies.

The film follows the story of one Oh Dae-Su, who is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing his captor’s motives. When he is finally released, Dae Su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and violence. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls for an attractive sushi chef.

The film won the Grand Prix at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival and high praise from the President of the Jury, director Quentin Tarantino.

In 2008, voters on CNN named it one of the ten best Asian films ever made.

If you have seen Zinda and feel it’s not worth watch, than check the original movie and you will know the difference.

There Will Be Blood

Some critics say this movie is a character study of oil hungry US and some say it’s a character study of a Man.

In my view it’s a journey through different layers of main character played by Daniel Day-Lewis(Gangs of New York.)

Daniel won best actor oscar for this piece of art. As a actor he has given his best in this movie.

A must watch if like the silence of a hard working, greedy Oil man searching for wealth.

In first 13 mins there is no dialogue ,but that’s what the depth of expression.

The film is anchored by the powerful presence of Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview, a silver miner turned oilman. Day-Lewis’ performance is a thing of beauty. Equal parts larger-than-life and nuanced, his Daniel Plainview perfectly embodies the spirit of a salesman while putting across the multiple layers required for the portrayal of a man with an all-too-human desire for power. Critics of Daniel Day-Lewis performance will say that his portrayal is far too theatrical, a criticism also given to his portrayal of Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York. The reality is that Day-Lewis does not carry this to everyone of his performances. However, he knows when a character is supposed to be showman. Plainview is a salesman and without his swagger he would be nowhere as a businessman. What is truly outstanding is that, unlike lesser actors, Day-Lewis is able to bring out the more human aspects of Plainview that make him a fascinating character to watch.

A classical just don’t miss it if you love art.

Forrest Gump (Movie)

Forrest Gump (1994)

“Forrest Gump” is one of those movies which keeps you wanting more and you’d wish it never finished. This is a fantastic movie, 10 / 10 from myside. This movie made me realise how brilliant actor Tom Hanks is, this movie is definitely worth buying and keeping it in your collection.

The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he’s a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he’s hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times.

A must have !!

Iron Man (Movie)

Iron Man (2008)

Ok, I have never read “Iron Man” comics ever in my life but this movie is awesome (I actually watched it twice).

The movie moved at a very good pace. The perfect Mix of action, comedy and some drama makes this movie more entertaining.

In the middle of the movie you’d probably think that this is it and the plot cant get bigger than this and Bamm!! the movie takes a roaring start again.

You know you’re going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics’ longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that’s Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quit hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there’s always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn’t get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won’t be able to guess it until it’s on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right.

Go watch it now!!

Bucket List (Movie)

Bucket List (2007)

Lets just say that this is a kind of a movie that makes you really ‘think’, about your life, about your childhood dreams and about how far you have strayed from what you were, I’m sure a Lotta 40(+) year old’s can associate with what im saying.

It’s a film about cancer, a perfect balance of comedy, sadness and the drama. The script was quite original, which was such a breath of fresh air, and the acting couldn’t have been any better. I would recommend this film to anyone and everyone – as it was such a feel-good movie that made you both laugh and cry at the same time – something you don’t come across too often.

“You only live once, so why not go out in style” ? That’s what two cancer- ward roommates, an irascible billionaire (Jack Nicholson) and a scholarly mechanic (Morgan Freeman), decide when they get the bad news. They compose a bucket list – things to do before you kick the bucket – and head off for the around-the-world adventure of their lives. Sky dive? Check. Power a Shelby Mustang around a racetrack? Check. Gaze at the Great Pyramid of Khufu? Check. Discover the joy in their lives before it’s too late? Check! Under the nimble direction of Rob Reiner, the two great stars provide the heart and soul, wit and wiles of this inspired salute to life that proves that the best time of all is right now.

The movie ends with a great track “Say” by John Mayer, great lyrics and feel which matches the movie perfectly.

3 Idiots

is what I feel after watching this awesome movie. It will take you to your memory line of ” Sweet Nothing” days.

The time when nothing matters,no body is boss, everyone is DJ(Daaljeet) in his/her own world. But quite surprisingly it’s more than a collage movie but it’s a lesson to learn during laugh riot that we need to take everything like “Sweet Nothing”.

All the cast of just make the movie a experience of life time.My favorite character is “Silencer” and Balatkari scene can be placed in top 10 of comedy scene of Hindi cinema.

It’s really unfair that “Silencer” doesn’t get nomination for best supporting actor in Film Fare.

Enjoy this movie with all of your friends and family.

Dev D

There are very few hindi movies that I watch but ‘DEV.D’ changed that perception.I was told that it’s a modern world Devdas, Honestly i was completely blown away by the trailer itself. The fact that the movie was directed by Mr. Maverick made me even more excited. So now when I have seen the movie I am absolutely satisfied because I got more than what I expected.

This movie is all about your sense of perception of Art.If you find charm in innovative screenplay, extraordinary photography, symbolic scenes and realistic acting you gotta love this cinematic masterpiece. But if you want to see an entertainer which is going to generate emotions, unfortunately its not for you.All those who find the story unrealistic must understand its not the portrayal of what happens in love but the most beautiful depiction of whats going through one’s mind when one gets/doesn’t get love. So, either you will crave for the movie to go on for few more hours or wait for it to end.

Abhay Deol is absolutely fantastic. There is not a single scene where you can doubt the authenticity of the character he is playing. Both the new girls are equally good. Mahie Gill(Paro)deserves all the applause for doing many a tough scenes with calming ease.Kalki(Chanda)is really cute and has given a mature performance.

In fact the sound track on the film has brought in a revolution in the Bollywood music industry. Hats off to Amit Trivedi .

Definitely a must see!!

The Bank Job

The Bank Job

Having been weaned on The Italian Job, Thomas Crown Affair and the Ocean’s 11 series, The Bank Job is glaringly lacking. Set in the 70s and based on a true story of an extraordinary bank heist, it would be understandable if snazzy gizmos and high-tech effects are absent, but the execution could use a lot of help.

Martine (Saffron Burrows) is an ex-model who hires her ex Terry (Jason Statham) to rob a bank. Despite having already turned over a new leaf complete with a wife and kid, Terry accepts. He and his team push through with their plan, only they uncover not just material wealth but blackmail-worthy bits of damning evidence as well.

There is no charisma between the main characters, between the purported exes and within the thieving team. None of them are even likable so it’s a stretch to get the audience to root for them. The end result is dry, probably because it british !!!!

Watch it if you’re a fan of The Italian Job, Thomas Crown Affair and the Ocean’s 11 series.

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan

Just for starters, Go watch this movie now.

This is one of the most brilliant war movies i have ever seen. The best part about this movie is that the story doesn’t focus on the heroic aspect, but rather the truth about war.

The movie is about eight men searching for a soldier by the name of James Ryan (Matt Damon), who’s the last of four brothers still left alive. After the attack of D-Day most of the soldiers still suffer the war syndrome and seem very doubtful of finding one person in a whole war-zone. Back at home, Ryan’s mother gets a letter about three out of four of her sons dying in war, and begs the soldiers to find her last one.

Tom Hanks arguably leads the cast as Captain Miller who is like the elder brother of the band. This is one of his most restrained performances and he is great. But, his supporting cast members that include: Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg and especially Giovanni Ribisi are at least equally excellent. Paul Giamatti makes a strong appearance. Even Vin Diesel, shows signs of a good actor as he impresses in a small role.

This movie won 5 Oscars and is definitely a must watch !!

The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker

Don’t know where to start on this one, Is it a brilliant movie or the stupidest ever??

There are two aspects: A civilian view and a veteran view

The movie fails most of the times on the facts, (such as EOD almost never, ever disarms IEDs, Three EOD guys trouncing around Bagdad on their own etc….)

I read a bit about this movie as I wanted to get view from Vet who served in Iraq, they summed it as ‘Inaccurate overrated movie’.

None the less for the civilian’s out there, they will probably love this movie as they don’t know how it is to be in such situations.

The story is deeply emotional, depicting a thoroughly disturbed individual’s life in hell. Jeremy Renner gives an incredibly powerful performance as an EOD officer completely hooked on adrenaline stemming from his everyday close shaves with death

Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty all gave good performances though not memorable in any way, they carry the sentiments of the soldiers currently serving in the Iraq war and I believe justice is brought to each of their roles. Supporting roles include Ralph Fiennes, who is everywhere right now, Guy Pearce and David Morse. Although much of them are pretty much in only a scene or two, they did pretty well considering. The Hurt Locker is a movie that transcends politics and all that mumbo jumbo.

As for me I really didn’t find anything exceptional in this movie.

It’s a one time watch!! Don’t miss it !!

21 (Movie)

21 (2008)

There are many stories about success based on hard-work and perseverance. There have also been many stories about success based on crime and abandonment of the law. Both of these scenarios can make for great movies — but when a movie like 21 comes out, it’s both great and fresh.

‘21′ is a movie about success based on locking in on a hole in the system, and exploiting it.

“21″ is the fact-based story about six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings.

Definitely very entertaining and a gripping movie.

Watch it !!!

Be Kind Rewind

Be Kind Rewind

“Be Kind Rewind” has its appeal in its simplicity, It’s just one of those rare movies where you just stop judging and accept the beauty if it.

The trailer really said it all about this film, and the film delivers everything it promises! What a great concept and how great a story we got from Gondry this time. Very accessible and entertaining from beginning to end. Jack Black and Mos Def play their parts convincingly and in pure natural brilliance.

My respect for Jack Black, for his vast taste, plays his part with such passion and conviction.

Set in a decaying inner-city enclave that’s being threatened by gentrification, Be Kind Rewind centers around two friends’ efforts to save a video store from foreclosure. When the videotapes are accidentally erased of their content in the store, two friends (Jack Black and Mos Def) try to avert disaster by creating their own homemade versions of the store’s films and soon become a big hit in the community. Members of the community start wanting to act and help produce the films

Donnie Brasco (1997)

Before I even start about this awesome flick, just go and watch it right now!!

“Donnie Brasco” is based on a True Story.

It’s the story of FBI agent Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp), who in the late 1970’s was hired to infiltrate the mafia. So, he got acquainted with hit-man Benjamin “Lefty” Ruggiero (Al Pacino). But lo and behold, Joe got too much into the mafia lifestyle, to the point where it dominated his life and kept him from his family. And no one ended up with a very good reward at the end.

This film gives you an accurate picture of life on America’s mean streets and an insight of organized crime.

Both Johnny Depp and Al Pacino are absolute brilliant as we expect them to be, with good support from Michael Madsen, Bruno Kirby, James Russo, Anne Heche and Zeljko Ivanek.

With his hair all greased back, Depp looks like the ultimate Mafioso.

Stop reading this review and go watch it now!!

The Prestige

the prestige The Prestige

The Prestige (2006)

This is one of those movies which will be talked about forever. This is simply a brilliant film.

What “The Prestige” does very well is recreate a period of show business history near the turn of the century in which competition between magicians was serious and intense. The workings of the complicated illusions are gorgeously brought to life via smartly detailed apparatus that replicate the actual mechanics of Victorian legerdemain.

Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Sir Michael Caine all contributed stunning, emotional performances. Rebecca Hall, who played Sarah to Bale’s Alfred Borden, turned in a highly charged performance as well, making Scarlett Johansson’s Olivia flat in comparison. And although some people thought the plot line a bit tedious, I found it to be refreshingly complex and engaging, while not being so complex as to lose you.

All in all the work is epic in sweep, beautifully filmed, and strongly acted.

“The rivalry between two magicians is exacerbated when one of them performs the ultimate illusion…..”

Definitely a must have!!

Hockey: Our National Game

leave a comment

Once I asked a 10 year old chap, “What’s out national game?”. As expected, he gave the correct answer, “It’s Hockey !!!”. But what came as a sudden shock to me was his next statement, “But why it is Hockey? Why not Cricket?”. I was clueless. This incident falls back some 6 years from now. A 19 year young Indian, that’s me, can’t justify why is it Hockey and why not Cricket.

That thought remained with me in my sub-conscious mind for years and made me not just watch or play a game, but also made me learn what legacy it has left behind.

Many of us today know that Hockey has given India many golden moment to boast and have pride upon. But only a few know that those moments are golden dreams that no other Hockey playing nation on the face of earth has been able to realize so far. Becoming the first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation, India’s first exposure to World Hockey was in 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games in which to everyone’s utter surprise, India came out as unbeaten champs registering its first ever Gold Medal !!! As a matter of fact, it did not conceded even a single goal in the tournament with Major Dhyan Chand (14 goals) being the top goal scorer on the charts. His astounding skills have been glorified in various apocryphal stories and anecdotes. A number such legends revolve around the fact that he had a magical control over dribbling the ball. Many say that the German Olympic officials broke his hockey stick to search for a magnet inside, and tried to console themselves saying he had added some sort of glue !!!

Indian Hockey Team Berlin 1936 Hockey: Our National Game

Indian-Hockey-Team-Berlin-1936

It was mere start of a revolution in the sport. World has to witness much more that this. These champions went on the win SIX Olympic Gold Medals until 1956 and that too, in a row. This was a feast which is still a record standing tall. With 8 Olympic, 1 World Cup, 2 Asian Games and 2 Asia Cup golds in all, this sport has made every Indian proud in a true sense.

Then why is Cricket followed more than Hockey in India despite of being our National Game? Is it a boring game? Is it the politics? Is it the bad play of players in recent past? Is it the lack of sponsors? or is it the lack f infrastructure? I believe it is we, the people of India who are responsible for current state of the game. How many times we ask ourselves to go and watch a Hockey match? How many times we even realized that India won a certain tournament and celebrated like we do for Cricket? It was Dhanraj Pillai’s Gold winner team returning from Asian Games who didn’t found any media or public with garlands to receive them at airport but it was letter of suspension from the Indian Hockey Board which welcomed him. No body gave it a second thought, many of us not even first.

With the Hockey World Cup 2010 (taking place in Delhi) already On, I believe it is our time to return the favor. Lets go and support our National Game.

Un prophète (A Prophet)

This was one of the first French film I have ever watched and i’m glad that i did.

The film is a hard hitting which keeps you gripped and awaiting the clever plot, this movie is very realistic and the way the plot unfolds is absolutely brilliant.

The film is about an Arab who enters jail after a life of trouble. He soon becomes gripped into the underworld of gang violence, he then joins a white gang whilst carrying out jobs for them. While he cleverly starts to build his own empire.

A 19-year-old man of North African origin is sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a police officer. When he enters prison, he is naïve, shy, and almost withdrawn and cannot read or write. When he leaves six years later, he has become a self possessed, educated individual, capable of controlling his own destiny as well as that of others. Jacques Audiard’s (Read My Lips, The Beat That My Heart Skipped) A Prophet, winner of the Grand Prix Award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, is an engrossing coming-of-age drama set in a French prison in which Malik el Djebena (Tahar Rahim), a Muslim estranged from his own community, is recruited into the ruling Corsican Mafia and eventually becomes a gang leader himself. Though deeply involved in nefarious and often bloody activities, the genuineness of his personality makes him an appealing and sympathetic character and adds depth to a riveting experience.

An epic as the Godfather, a must see. – London Times

The Shawshank Redemption

leave a comment

Some movies can change the way of life but this movie can change the mood of your life as soon as you remember the Hope around this movie.

3143119653 77c48dbe77 The Shawshank Redemption

It’s start as a prison story where Warden Samuel Norton had declared,”I believe in two things: discipline and the Bible. Here you’ll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord; your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.”

And what Red(Morgan Freeman) describe about that first night in Shawshank,”The first night’s the toughest, no doubt about it. They march you in naked as the day you were born, skin burning and half blind from that delousing shit they throw on you, and when they put you in that cell… and those bars slam home… that’s when you know it’s for real. A whole life blown away in the blink of an eye. Nothing left but all the time in the world to think about it.”

Than came the man called Andy(Tim Robbins),who filled Red with his hope of redemption.Check out conversation b/w Andy and Red about music.

Andy Dufresne: That’s the beauty of music. They can’t get that from you… Haven’t you ever felt that way about music?
Red: I played a mean harmonica as a younger man. Lost interest in it though. Didn’t make much sense in here.
Andy Dufresne: Here’s where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don’t forget.
Red: Forget?
Andy Dufresne: Forget that… there are places in this world that aren’t made out of stone. That there’s something inside… that they can’t get to, that they can’t touch. That’s yours.
Red: What’re you talking about?
Andy Dufresne: Hope.

In other scene what Andy declared and that is the real thing about this movie.

Andy Dufresne: “Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

The most courageous thing controlled by that hope of Andy was this.

Red: In 1966, Andy Dufresne escaped from Shawshank prison. I remember thinking it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel through the wall with it. Old Andy did it in less than twenty.Oh, Andy loved geology. I imagine it appealed to his meticulous nature. An ice age here, million years of mountain building there. Geology is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes really, pressure, and time.Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of shit smelling foulness I can’t even imagine, or maybe I just don’t want to. Five hundred yards… that’s the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile.

What this movie told me,“ Get busy living, or get busy dying.”

Enjoy this movie if you like to believe in Hope.

The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1994 (Best Picture, Best Actor– Morgan Freeman, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Mixing).

If I have to choose in many of Hitchcock’s movies, ‘Rear Window,’ ‘Vertigo,’ ‘Psycho,’ ‘The Birds,’ ‘Rope‘etc. I will choose ‘Rear Window’ as his best movie so far(no offence for fan of Vertigo or Psycho). My reason is personal as a movie watcher, this is the only movie where Hitchcock himself worked as a great movie watcher.

Just imagine, Hitchcock sitting on that wheel chair rather than James Stewart and peeping on his neighbours . That what a good movie watcher do ,he try to capture the world of movie and like to take part in it.That’s why I said Hitchcock was a great Movie watcher also.

rearwindwRept Rear Window(1954)

In this suspense thriller,James Stewart solve a murder mystery while sitting on wheelchair .Such a simple story but a great execution by a great director.

It received four Academy Award nominations, was ranked #48 on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies (10th Anniversary Edition).

On the website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has been universally praised, garnering a 100% certified fresh rating.

So take a DVD and see the murder as Peeping Tom. Enjoy!
