Be Kind Rewind

Be Kind Rewind

“Be Kind Rewind” has its appeal in its simplicity, It’s just one of those rare movies where you just stop judging and accept the beauty if it.

The trailer really said it all about this film, and the film delivers everything it promises! What a great concept and how great a story we got from Gondry this time. Very accessible and entertaining from beginning to end. Jack Black and Mos Def play their parts convincingly and in pure natural brilliance.

My respect for Jack Black, for his vast taste, plays his part with such passion and conviction.

Set in a decaying inner-city enclave that’s being threatened by gentrification, Be Kind Rewind centers around two friends’ efforts to save a video store from foreclosure. When the videotapes are accidentally erased of their content in the store, two friends (Jack Black and Mos Def) try to avert disaster by creating their own homemade versions of the store’s films and soon become a big hit in the community. Members of the community start wanting to act and help produce the films

Donnie Brasco (1997)

Before I even start about this awesome flick, just go and watch it right now!!

“Donnie Brasco” is based on a True Story.

It’s the story of FBI agent Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp), who in the late 1970’s was hired to infiltrate the mafia. So, he got acquainted with hit-man Benjamin “Lefty” Ruggiero (Al Pacino). But lo and behold, Joe got too much into the mafia lifestyle, to the point where it dominated his life and kept him from his family. And no one ended up with a very good reward at the end.

This film gives you an accurate picture of life on America’s mean streets and an insight of organized crime.

Both Johnny Depp and Al Pacino are absolute brilliant as we expect them to be, with good support from Michael Madsen, Bruno Kirby, James Russo, Anne Heche and Zeljko Ivanek.

With his hair all greased back, Depp looks like the ultimate Mafioso.

Stop reading this review and go watch it now!!

How a new band is struggling to cope up where a guitarist is about to become the Great and band struggle to throw itself out from the shadow of greatness. And our 15-year hard hitting journalist who is with them on the tour.

The film is based on Cameron Crowe’s(director) experiences touring with rock bands The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. In a Rolling Stone article, he talks about how he lost his virginity, fell in love, and met his heroes, experiences that are shared by William, the main character in the film.

” The only true currency in this bankrupt world… is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool.”

A advice to young fan and music journalist,” You CANNOT make friends with the rock stars. That’s what’s important. If you’re a rock journalist – first, you will never get paid much. But you will get free records from the record company. And they’ll buy you drinks, you’ll meet girls, they’ll try to fly you places for free, offer you drugs… I know. It sounds great. But they are not your friends. These are people who want you to write sanctimonious stories about the genius of the rock stars, and they will ruin rock and roll and strangle everything we love about it.

So go for it if you love rock n roll and want to see a drama full of music. And the soundtracks range from Eltan jhon ,David Bowie,Lou Reed,Led Zapp.

Miss it at your own risk :)

The Prestige (2006)

This is one of those movies which will be talked about forever. This is simply a brilliant film.

What “The Prestige” does very well is recreate a period of show business history near the turn of the century in which competition between magicians was serious and intense. The workings of the complicated illusions are gorgeously brought to life via smartly detailed apparatus that replicate the actual mechanics of Victorian legerdemain.

Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Sir Michael Caine all contributed stunning, emotional performances. Rebecca Hall, who played Sarah to Bale’s Alfred Borden, turned in a highly charged performance as well, making Scarlett Johansson’s Olivia flat in comparison. And although some people thought the plot line a bit tedious, I found it to be refreshingly complex and engaging, while not being so complex as to lose you.

All in all the work is epic in sweep, beautifully filmed, and strongly acted.

“The rivalry between two magicians is exacerbated when one of them performs the ultimate illusion…..”

Definitely a must have!!

Hockey: Our National Game

leave a comment

Once I asked a 10 year old chap, “What’s out national game?”. As expected, he gave the correct answer, “It’s Hockey !!!”. But what came as a sudden shock to me was his next statement, “But why it is Hockey? Why not Cricket?”. I was clueless. This incident falls back some 6 years from now. A 19 year young Indian, that’s me, can’t justify why is it Hockey and why not Cricket.

That thought remained with me in my sub-conscious mind for years and made me not just watch or play a game, but also made me learn what legacy it has left behind.

Many of us today know that Hockey has given India many golden moment to boast and have pride upon. But only a few know that those moments are golden dreams that no other Hockey playing nation on the face of earth has been able to realize so far. Becoming the first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation, India’s first exposure to World Hockey was in 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games in which to everyone’s utter surprise, India came out as unbeaten champs registering its first ever Gold Medal !!! As a matter of fact, it did not conceded even a single goal in the tournament with Major Dhyan Chand (14 goals) being the top goal scorer on the charts. His astounding skills have been glorified in various apocryphal stories and anecdotes. A number such legends revolve around the fact that he had a magical control over dribbling the ball. Many say that the German Olympic officials broke his hockey stick to search for a magnet inside, and tried to console themselves saying he had added some sort of glue !!!

Indian Hockey Team Berlin 1936 Hockey: Our National Game

Indian-Hockey-Team-Berlin-1936

It was mere start of a revolution in the sport. World has to witness much more that this. These champions went on the win SIX Olympic Gold Medals until 1956 and that too, in a row. This was a feast which is still a record standing tall. With 8 Olympic, 1 World Cup, 2 Asian Games and 2 Asia Cup golds in all, this sport has made every Indian proud in a true sense.

Then why is Cricket followed more than Hockey in India despite of being our National Game? Is it a boring game? Is it the politics? Is it the bad play of players in recent past? Is it the lack of sponsors? or is it the lack f infrastructure? I believe it is we, the people of India who are responsible for current state of the game. How many times we ask ourselves to go and watch a Hockey match? How many times we even realized that India won a certain tournament and celebrated like we do for Cricket? It was Dhanraj Pillai’s Gold winner team returning from Asian Games who didn’t found any media or public with garlands to receive them at airport but it was letter of suspension from the Indian Hockey Board which welcomed him. No body gave it a second thought, many of us not even first.

With the Hockey World Cup 2010 (taking place in Delhi) already On, I believe it is our time to return the favor. Lets go and support our National Game.

Un prophète (A Prophet)

This was one of the first French film I have ever watched and i’m glad that i did.

The film is a hard hitting which keeps you gripped and awaiting the clever plot, this movie is very realistic and the way the plot unfolds is absolutely brilliant.

The film is about an Arab who enters jail after a life of trouble. He soon becomes gripped into the underworld of gang violence, he then joins a white gang whilst carrying out jobs for them. While he cleverly starts to build his own empire.

A 19-year-old man of North African origin is sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a police officer. When he enters prison, he is naïve, shy, and almost withdrawn and cannot read or write. When he leaves six years later, he has become a self possessed, educated individual, capable of controlling his own destiny as well as that of others. Jacques Audiard’s (Read My Lips, The Beat That My Heart Skipped) A Prophet, winner of the Grand Prix Award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, is an engrossing coming-of-age drama set in a French prison in which Malik el Djebena (Tahar Rahim), a Muslim estranged from his own community, is recruited into the ruling Corsican Mafia and eventually becomes a gang leader himself. Though deeply involved in nefarious and often bloody activities, the genuineness of his personality makes him an appealing and sympathetic character and adds depth to a riveting experience.

An epic as the Godfather, a must see. – London Times

The Shawshank Redemption

Some movies can change the way of life but this movie can change the mood of your life as soon as you remember the Hope around this movie.

3143119653 77c48dbe77 The Shawshank Redemption

It’s start as a prison story where Warden Samuel Norton had declared,”I believe in two things: discipline and the Bible. Here you’ll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord; your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.

And what Red(Morgan Freeman) describe about that first night in Shawshank,”The first night’s the toughest, no doubt about it. They march you in naked as the day you were born, skin burning and half blind from that delousing shit they throw on you, and when they put you in that cell… and those bars slam home… that’s when you know it’s for real. A whole life blown away in the blink of an eye. Nothing left but all the time in the world to think about it.

Than came the man called Andy(Tim Robbins),who filled Red with his hope of redemption.Check out conversation b/w Andy and Red about music.

Andy Dufresne: That’s the beauty of music. They can’t get that from you… Haven’t you ever felt that way about music?
Red: I played a mean harmonica as a younger man. Lost interest in it though. Didn’t make much sense in here.
Andy Dufresne: Here’s where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don’t forget.
Red: Forget?
Andy Dufresne: Forget that… there are places in this world that aren’t made out of stone. That there’s something inside… that they can’t get to, that they can’t touch. That’s yours.
Red: What’re you talking about?
Andy Dufresne: Hope.

In other scene what Andy declared and that is the real thing about this movie.

Andy Dufresne: “Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

The most courageous thing controlled by that hope of Andy was this.

Red: In 1966, Andy Dufresne escaped from Shawshank prison. I remember thinking it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel through the wall with it. Old Andy did it in less than twenty.Oh, Andy loved geology. I imagine it appealed to his meticulous nature. An ice age here, million years of mountain building there. Geology is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes really, pressure, and time.Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of shit smelling foulness I can’t even imagine, or maybe I just don’t want to. Five hundred yards… that’s the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile.

What this movie told me,“ Get busy living, or get busy dying.”

Enjoy this movie if you like to believe in Hope.

The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1994 (Best Picture, Best Actor– Morgan Freeman, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Mixing).

Rear Window(1954)

If I have to choose in many of Hitchcock’s movies, ‘Rear Window,’ ‘Vertigo,’ ‘Psycho,’ ‘The Birds,’ ‘Rope‘etc. I will choose ‘Rear Window’ as his best movie so far(no offence for fan of Vertigo or Psycho). My reason is personal as a movie watcher, this is the only movie where Hitchcock himself worked as a great movie watcher.

Just imagine, Hitchcock sitting on that wheel chair rather than James Stewart and peeping on his neighbours . That what a good movie watcher do ,he try to capture the world of movie and like to take part in it.That’s why I said Hitchcock was a great Movie watcher also.

rearwindwRept Rear Window(1954)

In this suspense thriller,James Stewart solve a murder mystery while sitting on wheelchair .Such a simple story but a great execution by a great director.

It received four Academy Award nominations, was ranked #48 on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies (10th Anniversary Edition).

On the website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has been universally praised, garnering a 100% certified fresh rating.

So take a DVD and see the murder as Peeping Tom. Enjoy!

At the core of it all, Be Kind Rewind tells a great story about how you don’t really need high-tech equipment to make movies. Who needs film-school when you’ve got your friends and a cheap camera?
