There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he’s merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. Duane Allman died shortly after At Fillmore East shipped, and the Brothers haven’t scaled such heights since. But, then, neither has anyone else.—Steven Stolder
Statesboro Blues:- One of the best song from the album, this song shows a clear influence of blues on the band. The slide guitar played by Duane Allman is all time best guitar performance. It was ranked #9 by Rolling Stone in their list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time. This version was inspired from the verion of Taj Mahal.Duane Allman started playing this after hearing the version by an influential Blues musician named Taj Mahal. His brother Gregg gave him the Taj Mahal album as well as a bottle of medicine for his cold. The next time Gregg saw him, Duane had emptied the bottle, washed the label off, and was using it to play slide guitar.A another story about the song is like that“ At the end of Duane Allman’s guitar solo, he hit an off-key note that his brother Gregg called the “note from hell.”
Whipping Post:-This song’s lyrics center on a metaphorical whipping post, an evil woman and futile existential sorrow.Gregg Allman wrote this on an ironing board using burnt matches. He got the idea in the middle of the night and couldn’t find a pen…:),In this album the duration of song is about 22 mins. This song make me so addicted to Allman .
Hot ‘Lanta:-It is an instrumental song. The title is a nickname for the city of Atlanta. The dual guitars in “Hot ‘Lanta” remind me of 2 warriors on horses having a sword fight.
After listening this album you will like to be tied on whipping post with Allman Brothers band..Sometimes I feel like I hav been tied to the whipping post……..
