The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time is a book by American economist Jeffrey Sachs. It was a New York Times bestseller.
Sachs argues that extreme poverty—defined by the World Bank as incomes of less than 1 dollar per day—can be eliminated globally by the year 2025, through carefully planned development aid.
Sachs places a great deal of emphasis on the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a first step towards eliminating extreme poverty, which currently affects 1.1 billion people worldwide.
But today when I read about Charter Cities (http://www.chartercities.org/concept),this concept remind me this book. It is a good read if you like to view a economist view on poverty.
The practical approach of this book can be Charter Cities and I like to see this concept real as it can be.
Charter City concept:-” Charter cities offer a truly global win-win solution. These cities address global poverty by giving people the chance to escape from precarious and harmful subsistence agriculture or dangerous urban slums. Charter cities let people move to a place with rules that provide security, economic opportunity, and improved quality of life. Charter cities also give leaders more options for improving governance and investors more opportunities to finance socially beneficial infrastructure projects. “
Grab this book and check out the concept of Charter city if you think we as people have power to diminish poverty from India. Enjoy !
