We all have some past… we all have dreams for our future.
…and in the end, none of us wants to say “I never got my shot”…
Girlie tough, ain’t enough” believes Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood), a boxing trainer, and never train girls. He lives by his rules until one day Maggie (Hilary Swank) comes in his life to change it all. A 31 years old waitress, Maggie wants to follow her dream to be a champion in the sport and wants no-one else but Frankie to be her guide, her mentor, her trainer. Frankie tries hard to avoid her, discourage her and keep her out of his Hit Pit Gym, but she didn’t walked in just to walk out like that. He finally gives in and has to not only train her but also see her watching break his rules… one, after the other. He made her fight in ring thinking she might give up after losing early matches, but to his surprise, she knocked out her competitors in the very first round stamping her bull solid punches on their face. Her hunger to fight more makes Frankie even pay other managers to arrange a fight as all saw an obvious defeat in making their fighter stand in front of Maggie. So now he plays the gamble. He moves her one level up. But does it make any difference to her? Not at all. He gradually realize this special bond they are sharing. He realizes the care inside him for Maggie and adores her as his own daughter. They work together as the best team and time comes when she is ready to challenge the world champion… ready to be a million dollar baby. What happens next? Well that’s a million dollar question itself…
In an age of bloated spectacle and computer-generated effects extravaganzas, Eastwood turns an elegant screenplay by Paul Haggis (adapted from the book Rope Burns: Stories From the Corner by F.X. Toole, a pseudonym for veteran boxing manager Jerry Boyd) into a simple, humanitarian example of classical film-making, as deeply felt in its heart-wrenching emotions as it is streamlined in its character-driven storytelling.
Winner of the Oscar in 4 caegories: Best Achievement in Directing (Eastwood), Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Morgan Freeman), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Hilary Swank)… Million Dollar Baby is a tale you simply can’t afford to miss…
